This two-day private workshop is designed for those with some wheel-throwing experience who want to deepen their understanding of wheel throwing, refine their technique and explore traditional East Asian approaches to working with clay, particularly the practice of throwing off the hump.

Whether you are relatively new to the wheel and want to develop a solid technical foundation, or have been throwing for a while and wish to explore new approaches, the workshop offers an opportunity to learn at your own pace through demonstrations, practical exercises and individual guidance. The workshop is available in Finnish or English.

What you'll learn and experience

Preparing clay for throwing

We will begin by getting to know the clay through spiral wedging, a wedging technique used in East Asian pottery traditions. You will learn how to prepare clay for throwing and develop a better understanding of how the preparation influences the work that follows.

East Asian throwing off the hump

You will learn the kikuneri technique and practice throwing multiple pieces from a single larger mass of clay. This approach is particularly suited to repetition throwing and series production, as it eliminates the need to prepare a separate portion of clay for each piece. Through demonstrations and guided practice, we will explore each stage of the process and work towards greater consistency, control and confidence at the wheel.

Trimming and shaping

On the second day, we will return to the pieces made during the first day and practice trimming and shaping them on the wheel. You will also learn how to use a trimming chuck to support your work during trimming, helping to make the process more efficient and ergonomic.

Developing sensitivity and an intuitive relationship with clay

Beyond technique, the workshop explores the philosophy and mindset behind traditional East Asian approaches to pottery. We will learn to listen to the clay, observe how it responds and adapt our movements accordingly, developing a more attentive and intuitive relationship with the material.

Through step-by-step demonstrations, individual guidance and repeated practice, you will have the space to explore the techniques at your own pace, ask questions and develop a deeper feel for the process in a calm and supportive learning environment.

About the teacher

I studied wheel throwing in Denmark, including with Eric Landon (Tortus), before spending a year as an intern at Tōsei, a ceramics studio where I deepened my understanding of traditional East Asian techniques and approaches to pottery.

My teaching draws on these experiences, combining technical guidance with an emphasis on observation, repetition and a deeper understanding of the relationship between the potter and the clay.

A space to slow down and learn

The workshop offers two dedicated days to slow down, refine your technique and explore a more mindful approach to wheel throwing. Through observation, repetition and focused practice, we will develop a deeper understanding of the process and skills you can carry into your own work.

The workshop takes place over two days, with 6 hours on the first day and 4 hours on the second, including breaks. Dates are arranged individually with each participant to find a suitable time.

Please note: The workshop emphasises technique and the philosophy of working with clay rather than the production of finished pieces. The work created during the workshop will not be fired.
